Theatrical poster of Bramayugam

Bramayugam, a Malayalam film set in the 17th century, is a captivating blend of horror, social commentary, and masterful filmmaking. The film's rich atmosphere and suspenseful narrative draw viewers into a world where ancient folklore collides with the harsh realities of caste and power.

A Story Steeped in Folklore and Mystery

The plot revolves around Thevan and Koran, two individuals who find themselves entangled in a nightmarish situation after escaping the horrors of the slave trade. Seeking refuge, they stumble upon a seemingly abandoned mansion, unaware of the sinister forces that lurk within its walls. As Thevan becomes ensnared by the malevolent entity that controls the manor, he must forge an unlikely alliance with the mansion's cook to overcome the evil that threatens to consume them both.

A Showcase of Stellar Performances

Bramayugam boasts a stellar cast led by the legendary Mammootty. Arjun Ashokan's portrayal of Thevan is both captivating and heartbreaking, as he embodies the character's resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. The supporting cast delivers equally strong performances, fleshing out the world of Bramayugam and adding depth to the narrative.

A Masterful Blend of Technical Brilliance

The film's technical aspects are nothing short of impressive. The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, creating a palpable sense of dread and unease. The choice of the greyscale color pallet was a master stroke from the color graders. The sound design is equally masterful, using subtle aural cues to heighten the film's suspense and immerse viewers in its world. The perfect blend of the cinematography, color grading, and the sound design makes it an immersive experience for viewers.

More Than Just Horror: A Social Commentary

Bramayugam transcends the horror genre by weaving in thought-provoking themes of caste and social hierarchy. The film explores the power dynamics at play in 17th-century Kerala, highlighting the injustices faced by those on the lower rungs of the social ladder. This social commentary adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, making Bramayugam a film that lingers long after the credits roll.

Critical Reception and Accolades

Bramayugam received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The film's performances, particularly Mammootty's, were singled out for praise. The film's cinematography and sound design were also lauded for their contribution to the overall atmosphere. Bramayugam was a box office success, grossing over ₹85 crore.

A Must-Watch for Horror Fans and Discerning Viewers

Bramayugam is a must-watch for fans of horror cinema and those seeking a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. With its rich atmosphere, compelling story, and strong performances, Bramayugam is a cinematic experience that will stay with you long after you've seen it.

The Downside

If at all I have to talk about the downside of the movie, that would be the action choreography towards the end of the movie. It was lagging and felt unnecessarily long. Also, at times, I felt as if the director had lost his conviction about the storyline. Somehow, the movie started with the mood of "Tumbbad" and finished with "Lord of the Rings"!
